Every fee, start to finish

Every cost between your bank and a wallet you control, in Bitcoin rather than dollars, because buy prices differ. Each fee links to the page Independent Reserve publishes it on. The spread is the exception: nobody publishes that, so we measure it against a weighted global spot price.

NZD depositNew Zealand dollars reach Independent Reserve two ways, and there is no free local transfer. Below NZ$50,000 the only route is a debit or credit card at 3.5%, and your own bank may treat a credit card payment as a cash advance on top. From NZ$50,000 you can send an international SWIFT transfer instead, which costs whatever your bank charges: free online at ANZ and on Westpac One, NZ$20 to NZ$30 by phone or in a branch, plus anything correspondent banks deduct. How the fees work

How far Independent Reserve’s buy price sits above the weighted global spot price. No exchange publishes this, so we measure it: it is the gap between what a Bitcoin costs on the world market and what they charge for one. A negative figure means they are below spot. 0.50% until you have traded NZ$50,000 in 30 days, then it steps down. The buy price is the lowest offer on their order book. There is no Lightning, so this is a fixed cost that weighs heavily on small buys. All told, NZ$100 is worth 0.00069453 BTC at the world market price and 0.00056620 BTC lands in your wallet, so 0.00012833 BTC goes in costs: 18.48% all-in.

How long it takes

Signing up and verifying your ID usually takes ten minutes and is a one-off. After that a bank transfer clears the same day, often within the hour, and your Bitcoin is bought the moment it lands.

Getting your Bitcoin out

Once bought you can withdraw on-chain to a wallet you control. Expect a small network fee and a wait of ten minutes to an hour. We recommend doing that rather than leaving Bitcoin on any exchange.

Against the other NZ exchanges

Same NZ$100, same minute. The difference is how much Bitcoin you’d gain or lose by buying there instead of here.
